INSIDE THE SONORA OPEN:

Polo Gutierrez is back! After taking some time off after the 2015 WRT Cali Open in May due to an elbow injury, Gutierrez makes his first pro tour stop in almost one year at the 2016 Sonora Open. Gutierrez was the Champion of the 2013 WRT Sonora Open and in 2015 he faced racquetball powerhouse Jake Bredenbeck in the finals where Bredenbeck defeated Gutierrez to win his first ever WRT title. Adding Gutierrez back into the draw mixes things up at the top of the rankings. As we say on the WRT, anything can happen!

Alex Cardona, the number one ranked player on the WRT, and former Sonora Open Champion (2014) is competing for what could be his 11th WRT title, if he can fend off the competition this weekend. That competition includes consistent semifinalist and 2015 Most Improved Player of the Year, Jaime Martell. Also in attendance is Andree Parrilla who is hungry for another WRT title. Parrilla ended 2015 with a Championship Title at the 2015 WRT Monterrey Open. Plus, you never know how players like Felipe Munoz, Christian Longoria, Nicolai Miramontes, Francisco Troncoso and Danny Lavely can shake things up in the draw. You don’t want to miss all the high level action at the Sonora Open. Racquetball pros are competing for bigger prize money as the WRT has increased the purse for all 2016 events. Follow the WRT on Facebook and Twitter to get live updates and view pictures from the event.

YOUNGSTERS ON THE RISE

The WRT is dedicated to growing the sport of racquetball and to support that mission in 2016 we are discounting entries for pros who are 18 and Under by 50%. The young players took advantage of that for the 2016 Sonora Open so keep an eye on these seven youngsters on the rise:

  • Miguel Rodriguez, Jr.
  • Sebastian Fernandez
  • Rodolfo Esparza
  • Victor Camacho
  • Daniel Lopez
  • Alejandro Prieto
  • Homar Prieto
